Played in the 81000 seater Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow and watched by President Vladimir Putin and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the hosts displayed a fine performance before seeing the back of the net through a Yuri Gazinsky header in the 12th minute off an Aleksandr Golovin's set-piece.
After the first goal, Putin’s boys never turned back and continued with a fine performance that saw them dominate the Saudi’s.
Russia went wild scoring four more goals thanks to Artem Dzyuba, Denis Cheryshev(2) and Aleksandr Golovin to finish the Saudi Arabia job and bring a smile to their fans including the country’s number one citizen, Putin.
The tournament resumes today with three games; Egypt will play Uruguay whereas Morocco and Iran will also lock horns.
